Redesigning theanve.com around work, not claims
What we took from the way research labs present themselves — text wordmarks, dated entries, hairlines instead of boxes — and why the stats bar had to go.

The first version of theanve.com did what most early company sites do: it explained. A hero with a floating network of dots, a row of statistics, five principles in a grid, a list of domains. All of it was true in spirit and none of it was checkable. A visitor who wanted to know what ANVE actually does had to take our word for it.
We spent a day measuring how the labs we respect present themselves — not from memory, from the live pages. Type sizes, backgrounds, what the homepage opens on, how many fonts. The pattern was consistent enough to write down.
What the good ones have in common
- Text wordmarks. OpenAI, ANTHROP\C, Thinking Machines, teenage engineering — all type. We had been treating "ANVE" in a typeface as a placeholder until the logo landed. It isn't a placeholder. It's the norm.
- One typeface, maybe two. A sans for structure and, sometimes, a serif for one warm word. Never a third.
- The homepage is a table of contents of work. Releases, papers, news. Nobody shows a stats bar. Dated entries do the persuading.
- Metadata makes it real. Dates, categories, read times. A "26 min read" is more credible than an adjective.
- One playful element, and it's typographic — an italic word, an underline — never a particle field.
A dated entry beats an adjective. Every time.
What that meant for us
We cut the stats bar, the pillar grid, the domain chips, the quote block, and the animated hero. We cut two of the four fonts and the theme toggle. What stayed was the ecosystem index (the right instinct, already there) and the metadata plumbing.
The new homepage opens on a statement and immediately follows it with a status line — the date of the last journal entry, the state of the logo, whether we're hiring. If any of those go stale, the page looks stale. That's the point. It forces us to keep working in public.

The system, in one table
| Element | Decision |
|---|---|
| Wordmark | "ANVE", Inter Tight 700, −0.045em. Replaced by the logo in two places when it lands. |
| Surface | Paper #F4F3EF, ink #141412. One mode, no toggle. |
| Type | Inter Tight for everything. Fraunces italic for one word per headline. DM Mono for metadata. |
| Accent | Oxblood #8B2E2E. Link hover, selection, the status dot. Nothing else. |
| Motion | 12px fade-up on reveal, once. Nothing loops. |
The old site described products as finished. The new one says what exists and dates it. We think that's the more serious position, and the more interesting one to follow.
